Job Summary:                                      
Reporting to and in partnership with the President & CEO, the Political Director will provide leadership for our political and elections work, working collaboratively with our Director of Policy and Advocacy, NDN Collective ecosystem of organizations, board of directors, and contract lobbyists.


NDN Collective is the most ambitious, systemic effort to empower Indigenous communities in the history of philanthropy. We are creating a paradigm change in how society invests in Indigenous Peoples by dramatically scaling up investment and shifting decision-making power to Indigenous Peoples. We are doing four key things to create a new ecosystem that supports Indigenous self-determination:

  1. We are dramatically increasing philanthropic investment into Indigenous-led organizations, with the goal of giving out $50M per year in grants by 2020.
  2. We are creating an Indigenous-led Community Development Financial Institution to move $100M of for-profit investment into projects led by and serving Indigenous communities.
  3. We are building capacity in Indigenous communities to be able to absorb this new influx of capital.
  4. We are advocating for Indigenous rights and policy changes that will enable our peoples and communities to thrive.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic advice to NDN on evolving political dynamics and strategies to advance our mission.
  • Lead the political component of a base-building strategy..
  • Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with key allies, coalitions, organizations, government officials, candidates, elected officials and the media.
  • Manage recruiting volunteers and voters through activities such as voter registration drives and phone banking.
  • Respond to requests for information from key allies, coalitions, organizations, government officials, candidates, elected officials and the media.
  • Coordinate special political events. 
  • Represent NDN Collective publicly as an expert on our political issues.
  • Represent the organization at events, which may include some travel.
  • Conduct political and electoral research, and track political developments in all levels of government: local, state, federal and tribal.
  • Manage the NDN endorsement process.
  • Fundraising for political and electoral work.
  • Assist in broad organizational strategy development.
  • Any other duties as assigned


Education, Experience, Skills

  • Three (3) to five (5) years’ experience working in policy, philanthropy, politics or other relevant field.  A relevant advanced degree is desired, particularly a JD, but not required. Work experience can substitute.
  • High-level understanding of Indigenous social, racial and economic change and progressive movements backed by direct experience with community-organizing, coalition building, advocacy, campaign and/or electoral experience.
  • Expert interpersonal skills and able to easily develop deep, trusting relationships with a diverse set of partners, including key allies, coalitions, organizations, government officials, candidates, elected officials and the media
  • Ability to mobilize allies in issue-based and electoral coalitions.
  • Demonstrated experience in and commitment to eradicating Indigenous economic, racial, climate and other inequities.
  • Experience with 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and PAC compliance.
  • Excellent writing and qualitative research skills.
  • Knowledge of policy and policy-making process at a local (county), state, federal and tribal level.
  • Ability to mobilize allies in issue-based and electoral coalitions.
  • Experience thriving in a fast-paced and politically sensitive environments.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and listening communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, hardworking individual with ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative policy team.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to juggle multiple deadlines and priorities.
  • Working knowledge of political landscapes, including basic mechanics of tribal, federal state and local governance and legislative processes.

  • COMMUNICATOR: You are an exceptionally strong communicator who can create high-quality materials and deliver compelling messages and presentations. You have experience using this strength in securing funds for nonprofits.
  • ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT: You are ambitious and creative and enjoy the process of building something from the ground up. You are excited by the opportunity to come in and have a heavy hand in shaping our development operations. 
  • SOCIALLY & EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT: You are able to work efficiently and respectfully with others. You understand how individuals, groups, and societies work and you build rapport through being trustworthy and empathetic. 
  • DETAIL ORIENTED: You strive for perfection and are able to move from the high level of a project to its smallest details. 
  • FLEXIBLE: You thrive in a fast-paced environment and are flexible when it is necessary. You are willing to travel when needed.
