Job Summary:                                      
Reporting to the Director of Grantmaking, the Capacity Building Coordinator will  develop, coordinate and offer an array of capacity building programming and resources relevant to the self-determination,  sovereignty, regenerative sustainability and power of Indigenous Peoples, tribes and Indigenous-led organizations.  The Capacity Building Coordinator will offer direct technical support and assistance, and/or  facilitate relevant referrals.   


NDN Collective is the most ambitious, systemic effort to empower Indigenous communities in the history of philanthropy. We are creating a paradigm change in how society invests in Indigenous Peoples by dramatically scaling up investment and shifting decision-making power to Indigenous Peoples. We are doing four key things to create a new ecosystem that supports Indigenous self-determination:

  1. We are dramatically increasing philanthropic investment into Indigenous-led organizations, with the goal of giving out $50M per year in grants by 2020.
  2. We are creating an Indigenous-led Community Development Financial Institution to move $100M of for-profit investment into projects led by and serving Indigenous communities.
  3. We are building capacity in Indigenous communities to be able to absorb this new influx of capital.
  4. We are advocating for Indigenous rights and policy changes that will enable our peoples and communities to thrive.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and offer capacity building programming specific to the NDN Foundation grant programs, which includes funding in support of individual fellows, artists, tribes, communities and Indigenous led organizations. This may include but is not limited to: 
    • Technical Assistance to help organizations determine how to best utilize and leverage funding.
    • Peer Communities to encourage relationship-building, collaboration, and growth across grantee partners;
    • Funder Introductions to support our grantees building and sustaining relationships with other funders.
    • Learning and Evaluation to foster understanding of how grantees are utilizing funds, what they are learning, and how their work is contributing to the defense, development, and decolonization of our peoples in a way that is equitable and just for all people and the planet.
    • Cultural Awareness across programming that recognizes, prioritizes, and supports the cultural aspects of the people and organizations being funded.
    • Application Support Services with clear, comprehensive, and transparent guidelines to help applicants submit competitive proposals and feedback for those not selected to help improve their positioning for future funding opportunities.
    • Work collaboratively with Foundation Program Officers and staff in prioritizing and offering capacity building and technical support through a variety of means and venues, i.e. virtual/online programming, in-person convening’s; written materials; individualized/customized support.
    • Work collaboratively across the NDN Eco-system in order to best utilize available expertise for capacity building and technical support.
    • Develop and maintain a network of relevant resources, contractors or professional services  for capacity building and technical support.
    • Work with the Director of Grantmaking to develop and coordinate a manageable capacity building strategy, process,budget and schedule to effectively execute a comprehensive capacity building program.
    • Other duties as needed.


Education, Experience, Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field
  • Five years relevant experience
  • Prior grantmaking experience with a non-profit, government agency, or other entity


  • Commitment to serving the public in a mission driven organization]
  • Ability to assess qualitative and quantitative outcome data and to provide coaching and technical assistance to grantees to help them achieve exemplary results
  • Ability to work effectively with Indigenous Peoples and communities

  • Demonstrated understanding of program development and program effectiveness
  • Strategic thinking, able to conceptualize, lead and execute complex projects and effectively convey their impact to various audiences

  • Outstanding research and analytical skills
  • Outstanding partnership development skills
  • Success in persuasive writing and experience developing complex communication projects
  • Experience directing, motivating, developing and supervising staff and/or contractors
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
